  5. Why January Is the...

While the farm may appear quieter in January, it is actually one of the best times of year for teachers and school groups to plan an unforgettable field trip to Patterson Farm. Booking early allows groups to secure ideal dates, ensure the best possible experience, and have ample time to prepare students for hands-on learning opportunities. If you are already thinking ahead to spring, January is the perfect moment to begin planning.

This spring, Patterson Farm is excited to offer a variety of educational tours designed to engage students in meaningful, real-world learning. Our Dirt on Dirt Tour will run from March 9 through March 27, 2026, followed by the Farmer for the Day Tour from March 30 through April 17, 2026. The Strawberry Patch Tour will be available from April 20 through May 29, 2026. Each tour lasts approximately one to one and a half hours and is offered Monday through Friday by appointment only.

Spring is one of the busiest seasons at the farm, thanks to warmer weather, growing crops, and abundant outdoor learning opportunities. By booking your field trip in January, you can secure preferred dates and times, avoid last-minute scheduling conflicts, ensure availability for larger groups, and allow flexibility if plans need to change. Early planning helps create a smoother, more enjoyable experience for both teachers and our staff.

Our field trips are designed to align with Common Core curriculum standards while keeping students actively engaged. January is an ideal time for educators to review lesson plans and connect their visit to classroom topics such as agriculture and food systems, plant life cycles and soil science, farm animals and animal care, sustainability and environmental stewardship, and local history and community farming. Planning early allows teachers to incorporate Patterson Farm’s lessons and activities into classroom learning before and after the field trip to maximize educational impact.

Booking in January also reduces stress by giving teachers plenty of time to manage logistics. This includes coordinating transportation, sending permission slips home, communicating details with parents, and preparing students for what they will see and learn. With these details handled well in advance, educators can focus on building excitement and creating a meaningful learning experience for their students.

During a Patterson Farm field trip, students have the opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences. Depending on the season and program, they may learn how crops are planted, grown, and harvested, meet and learn about farm animals, explore where food comes from, discover the importance of farming in the local community, and participate in age-appropriate, hands-on activities. These experiences often spark curiosity and create lasting memories long after students return to the classroom.

Patterson Farm welcomes a wide range of educational groups, including public and private schools, homeschool co-ops, daycares, and early learning centers. Twice a year, during our spring and fall seasons, we also host Special Needs Day and Home School Day. Special Needs Day is designed to ensure our staff can meet any accommodations our guests may require, while Home School Day is structured to support the varying ages and interests of homeschool students. January is an excellent time to discuss group needs, grade levels, and special accommodations to ensure each visit is thoughtfully tailored.

Spring field trip calendars fill quickly, and early planning makes all the difference. By booking your spring field trip to Patterson Farm in January, you set your students up for an enriching, hands-on learning experience they will never forget.
